Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga celebrates 80 years of Service to the local and global community.
Celebration Dinner
Through the miracle of modern medicine, several of the charter members of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga made an appearance at a very special dinner celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Club.
Charter President, Henry Mitchelmore (President Tim), Reverend Stanley West (Graeme Callander), Richard Giltinan (Bob Evers), Percy Williamson (John Studdert), John Dunn (Peter Chenoweth), Herbert Smythe (Mike Murray), Walter Hardy (Bill Prest), Hughie Condon (Keith Condon), Robert Johnston (Graham Gorrel), Dr Cecil Sim (Ailsa Bowman) and Dr Alfred Nathan (Gordon Saggers) took their place at the dinner tables, resplendently attired in their 1930 Sunday best. Many of their ladies delighted us with their beautiful clothes, furs, jewellery, hats and fascinators. A special guest was a resurrected District Governor Albert Holtz, who travelled from Melbourne to present the Club with its Charter at Bellair's Commercial Hotel on 17 May 1930 (ably enacted by Wagga Club member PDG Bruce Barber).
We were also honoured by the presence of District Governor Irene Jones, Assistant Governor, Noelene Hogan, many Past District Governors, members from our sponsor the Rotary Club of Albury (who, incidentally, were also at our 50th anniversary), the Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire MP, Wagga Mayor and Rotarian Councillor Kerry Pascoe, rotarians from Wagga Sunrise, Henty, Hay, Kooringal and Wollundry. Please click here to see the complete guest list.
The son of charter member Hughie Condon, our own member Keith Condon, brought the 1920s and 1930s back to life for us with a snippet of their early lives in Mudgee and Wagga, and Hughie's journey to membership of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga.
Michelle Maddison, Curator of the Museum of the Riverina, enthralled us with a tale about four of the major events that shaped Wagga in the 1930s.
Our long-time Club historian, Laurie Fromholtz, relayed just a bit of our Club's long and colourful history. Without referring to a single note, Laurie told us about the projects and the people involved in building our legacy to the community. Click here to read an account written by Laurie for our website.
Thinking ahead, Laurie told members to start planning our Centenary, and asked those who would be present to 'have a beer for him'.
As with all of our dinner meetings, we had an International Toast. When deciding on who this international club would be, PP Bryan Short, searched for other clubs that share our birthday. He found several, but settled on the Rotary Club of Hereford in D1100 UK. This place is remarkably similar to Wagga Wagga in many ways. As usual, we asked everyone present to sign the letter to be sent to that Club - please see the scanned image below.
