Book! Book! Book!

Our Book Fair is usually held on the third weekend of May. Due to a clash of dates with the venue, the Book Fair will be held on the 28th and 29th of May 2011.

Our annual Book Fair is our biggest fundraiser. In 2010, this successful event will enable our club to hand out more than $26,000 to local, regional, national and international charities. The people of Wagga donate their books; our members sort and collate them year round, ready for the last weekend in May.

BOOK BONANZA - 30,000 REASONS TO BE THERE!

The Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga this year celebrates 80 years of service to the Wagga community since its charter in 1930. A key event in the club’s anniversary year is its eighth annual Book Fair – and there were 30,000 reasons to be there!

The Fair, held on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May at Kyeamba Smith Hall in the Wagga Showground, presented a mountain of more than 30,000 good quality locally sourced second-hand books at bargain prices. Joint coordinator Neil Hilpern said, “While those numbers might sound a bit daunting, our club members spend a lot of time during the year splitting the books up under quite a range of categories, and these are well signposted in the hall, making it fairly easy for buyers to find books that interest them”.

Neil commented: “It’s a great project that underlines what the club has been about over its 80 years: raising funds for Rotary community activities.  As well there is the added benefit of recycling material that otherwise might go to waste; and at the same time encouraging reading by making books more affordable”.

The Fair has enabled the club to raise in excess of $130,000 for community projects in the past eight years. It has also recycled hundreds of thousands of books.

If you have books you would like to donate, there are two local businesses who kindly act as drop-off points. Elders in Kincaid Street and Redline Autotech in Hammond Ave will happily accept your donation. If you cannot get to either of these locations, or have a very large donation, please contact us here and we will organise for a Rotarian to pick it up from you. Thank you for your support.
