RCKSM Completes Umeed Special Academy

To celebrate the completion of the newly renovated premises of Umeed Special Academy, a school for mentally and physically challenged children and adults in Karachi, RCKSM held a lunch for the children and faculty on August 26, 2008

Governor Mohammad Saeed Shamsi, member of Rotary Club of Lahore Sharqi;  Assistant Governor Rais Ahmed Khan, member of Rotary Club of Karachi Continental; and Governor's Regional Representative Ashraf Khan Ghori, member of Rotary Club of Karachi Universal, along with members of RCKSM attended the lunch. The guests were taken around the premises and met the children and faculty members of the school. Gifts and sweet boxes were distributed among all the children.

The Umeed Special Academy, located in Landhi, is a project of a non-profit NGO "Association for Special Children Rehabilitation" (ASCR), established by Mr. Shamshad Khan in March 2001. This school has been providing education and training to mentally and physically challenged children and young adults, all of whom come from poor and underprivileged homes.

In 2007, Rotary Club of Karachi Sunset Millennium took on the project of upgrading the facilities at Umeed Special Academy. Through a US$ 18,000 Matching Grant with Rotary Club Delhi Chanakyapuri, and donations from Rotary Club Wagga Wagga, Australia, and anonymous donors, RCKSM brought about a remarkable transformation at this school.

Under this project RCKSM renovated the entire building, which included painting of interior and exterior of school; water proofing of roof; new flooring in all class rooms; new light and fan fittings, replacement of doors and windows and instillation of  iron grills; new desks, chairs and white boards along with new teaching aid in all class rooms. Two new toilets were built, separate for boys and girls. The entire playground has been cemented with a covered play area equipped with swings, slides, and jungle-gym. The playground has been specially designed to help train the children for the Special Olympics. A new computer room has been set up with four PCs donated by Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. A van has also been provided for pick and drop of the children from homes to and from school.
